Q: What makes
some windows cost so much more than others?
A: As a rule, Window manufacturers have three
or four grades of windows. The lowest grades are
usually made in high volume form less expensive materials
and processes and may be available in more limited sizes and
styles. Higher window grades cost more because of
added material and manufact-uring costs due to more
intricate designs elements. Some products have limited
production because of lower demand and thus cost more per
unit. Custom windows are the most expensive because
the windows are made one-off "to order" and no economies of
scale are achieved. Even the lowest grade windows for
top manufacturers have good energy efficiency and a good
value. It all depends on what you want in features,
design and what your budget will allow.
Q: I would like a sky light but I am concerned
about stories I have heard about leaking. Is there
anything you can do to make sure there are no leaks.
A: A properly installed skylight of good
quality from a top manufacturer should not leak. |
Today's sky lights have been
engineered to solve problems of the past. Some new sky
lights even open making cleaning a breeze and providing
extra ventilation if needed.
Q: I was thinking of replacing my wood front
and back doors. I want a good looking door with low
maintenance. What can you suggest?
A: Solid wood exterior doors are still very
popular but many new innovations have been developed over
the last few years that give new options to home owners.
Steel doors use to be used only in commercial structures but
now new designs have made steel a real option for
homeowners. Because they are steel they are fire
proof, very secure and low maintenance. Fiberglass is
another option that you may want to consider. The
process allows the manufacturer of doors that replicate the
look of wood without the maintenance headaches. New
products offerings are being introduced each year so asks us
about what is new in doors today. |
Q: I like the
look of a divided light windows for my older home but aren't
they difficult to clean?
A: True divided light window have individual panes
divided by a framework of wood or metal. The
individual windows make cleaning more tedious. Today
many manufacturers are offering single light windows with a
grid of material sandwiched between the two panes of glass
this gives the look of a divided light window and the ease
of cleaning of the single light. Many manufacturers
make cleaning even easier by having the window tilt in for
cleaning.
Q: My windows have fog forming between the two
layers of glass and they seem dirty even after cleaning.
What causes this?
A: Water vapor between the windows is a sure
sign of window seal failure. Your windows have stopped
being as energy efficient as they once were.
You may want to consider replacement with current models that are
more durable and have better energy ratings.
Q: I am told my older home |
has window openings that do
not match standard size windows and I must buy very
expensive custom windows is there any other solution?
A: Yes. RichArt often resizes window and
door openings so the customer can take advantage of less
expensive standard size products. This includes such
things as patio door conversions, picture window enlargement
and garden window installations and whole house replacement
projects. Maintaining the integrity of your homes
architectural style may also be an important consideration
when choosing windows.
